Hallstar Feature Wall
Scope
The client desired an artistic representation of their international footprint to be installed on a feature wall in the lobby of their Chicago office.
The resulting criteria was 5 direct-to-wall floating botanical sculptures, each reflecting the company’s presence in a different country.

The wall is an 8’ by 34’ niche.

Inspiration + Mood
-botanical drawings that depict a plant’s growth stages within a single composition

Research + Development
Many metal forming tools and techniques were explored as well as various metal materials and construction methods.
Throughout these explorations, the overall aesthetic of the metal was developing and were presented to the client to make adjustments.
Tools + Techniques
-jewelry hammers used for texture
-metal forming tools
-mounting with threaded rods
-soldering for assembly

Proof of Concept
This process went through many stages exploring mounting techniques, attachment methods, finishes, and branch construction.
This stage is where gauges of wire and sheet metal was fine tuned.

Prototypes
Prototype 1- Uses outsourced welded branch construction combined with soldered floral elements and shows different colors/finishes.
Prototype 2- Shows better attachment methods, telescoping technique with copper piping, and explores hook mounting hardware as well.

Creative Strategy + Design

3D Paper templates were made to gauge the size and help with material estimations.

The sculptures were hand drawn and digitally traced.

Different sizes of copper tubing mapped out for branch construction
Fabrication
The sculptures were built vertically on a faux wall with the paper template being a guide for branch shape and overall size.
As it became 3 dimensional, fabrication was pivoted based on weight distribution and how the piece occupied space from all angles.
